Our impact

The poorest of the poor

After a 15 year civil war that killed over 5 million and orphaned almost 2 million children, the Democratic of the Cameroon offers no social services. Every home has lost family members to the civil war. Many children have no one to care for them and are left to wander the streets looking for food. Widows are left to scramble for money (usually resorting to prostitution) and to protect themselves from rape.

48 orphans have a home

We currently house 48 orphans after we added 16 new girls in February 2023. The new girls are ages 5 to 12 and come from some very difficult backgrounds. With an estimated 200 more orphans in our immediate neighborhood with no place to go, there is much work to do. Our children are loved, cared for and, in addition to attending a good school, we hire a teacher for 5 afternoons a week to help some of our children with learning disabilities.

We are growing

Our children are cared for in a safe, loving environment that we have been developing over the last 6 years. In April 2017 through the help of International Widows & Orphans Fund, we purchased 2 acres of land just outside the city of Uvira. We have completed the first 4 homes of a facility that will eventually be home for up to 60 orphans. We also have an area where we have successfully grown cabbage, rice, corn, wild spinach, tomatoes and onions and have sold surplus vegetables in the process of become self-sufficient.

97% of funds received reach the children

Our local staff volunteer their time. At this time we are only able to pay a small stipend to cover personal expenses. We are in the process of completing the second staff house on site that will provide safe housing for our Orphanage Director, David and his family, as well as Hosea, the manager and his family. The house moms also live on site.

We accept orphans from all tribes and religions

When David and his team started Grace Orphanage, they took in children with the most desperate needs. They did not discriminate on the basis of tribe (a major issue in most of central Africa) or religion. Some orphans have only vague memories of their parents’ beliefs. The children know that they are loved and that God has a plan and a purpose for their lives.
